The 10 best Disney songs of all time
Disney animated films are appreciated by children, but also by adults, not only for the plot itself: often the soundtrack plays a key role in the final success. There are so many Disney songs that have achieved incredible success, not least because established singers, such as Elton John, often lend their voices to the characters. Here, according to Billboard and its rankings, are the 10 most popular and successful Disney songs: do you agree with this ranking?
10. "A Whole New World" - Aladdin (1992)
Sung in the English version by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga, 'A Whole New World' has won many awards: the Oscar for Best Song, the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and for Best Song Written for a Film, Television or Other Audio-Visual Media. Over the years, the song has been reinterpreted by many successful artists.
9. "Let It Go" - Frozen (2013)
In 2013, 'Let It Go' was an incredible success, as was the film from which it is extracted. The song won the Academy Award for Best Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Audio-Visual Media, and also went platinum 19 times around the world.
8. "Circle of Life" - The Lion King (1994)
The soundtrack of 'The Lion King' is one of the best ever made for a Disney animated film and, to confirm this, it also won an Oscar. The success of the music is due to composer Hans Zimmer and Elton John and Tim Rice, authors of music and lyrics. Among the most beautiful songs is the opening song 'Circle of Life', sung at the beginning of the film by the actress Carmen Twillie.
7. "Beauty and the Beast" - Beauty and the Beast (1991)
In seventh position is a beautiful love song, the music of which is also the theme of the film from which it is extracted. 'Beauty and the Beast' won the Oscar for best song, the Golden Globe for best original song and, finally, also the Grammy Award. In the original version, the song was recorded by the unforgettable Angela Lansbury: her performance can be heard during the famous dance sequence between Belle and the Beast.
6. "Colors of the Wind" - Pocahontas (1995)
Especially in the 1990s, Disney won over young and old with its films thanks to its wonderful songs, which were unrivalled in terms of awards received in that decade. Even in 1996, in fact, it was a Disney song that won the Oscar for best song, the Golden Globe for best original song and the Grammy Award: in this case we are talking about 'Colors of the Wind', which was also highly appreciated for its lyrics with strongly spiritual content.
5. "How Far I’ll Go" - Moana (2016)
'How Far I'll Go' was performed in the film by US actress and singer Auli'i Cravalho, while for the soundtrack it was also recorded by Canadian singer Alessia Cara, who released it as a single. The song's success was certified with 14 platinum records.
4. "Hakuna Matata" - The Lion King (1994)
Is there a more light-hearted song than 'Hakuna Matata'? With music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, it is impossible not to get a boost of good humour from this single. Curiously, in the list of the 10 best Disney songs, there are two tracks from 'The Lion King', but the song from this film that went on to win the Oscar for best song, namely 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight', is not present.
3. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" - Encanto (2021)
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and performed by US singer Adassa, in 2021 this was the first song from a Disney animated film to appear in the Billboard Top 5 since 'Let It Go' in 2014. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
2. "You've Got a Friend in Me" - Toy Story (1995)
The distinctive song from the wonderful Toy Story saga could not be missing from the charts, a song composed in the original version by Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett. Over the years, the song has been reinterpreted by many artists, even in different languages, from Spanish to Italian.
1. "Go the Distance" - Hercules (1997)
At the top is the delicate 'Go the Distance', recorded by Roger Bart in the version used in a famous sequence in the film, while Michael Bolton recorded the version for the end credits. As is often the case with Disney films, the song has been reinterpreted for the film in many languages: for example, in Spanish it is sung by Ricky Martin.
